“Because of your smile, you make life more beautiful.“
Thich Nhat Hanh
Helping the body to regain its physical capabilities and mobility, and creating a safe space for the mind to heal is at the heart of our jobs. Yoga, soft acrobatics and partner practices develop a deeper awarness of our own bodies, and provide a point of focus to anchor the mind. It also creates a sense of community, developping the way we perceive ourselves and others, how we relate, interact and connect.
Stillness, breathing and meditation, on the other hand, create an opportunity for the body and the mind to digest past experiences and emotions, to process them. Difficulties with breathing, digestion, anxiety, depression, and so on, can be slowly transformed into greater confidence, calmness and general feeling of ease.
At The Maitri Movement, we believe aligning heads, hearts and actions creates a tremendous potential for positive social evolution. Actively working towards our own inner peace impacts on the world peace. Together, let's take this principle a step further!
The Maitri Movement offers refugees and asylum-seekers free classes of therapeutic yoga, soft partner practices and meditation, in light of the current devastating refugee crisis. We offer an accessible way of moving, slowly working through postures in a safe way, with a particular attention to calming breathing techniques and poses relieving headaches, pack pains and difficulties to sleep.
The classes are led in English. We know many attendees may not understand the language really well, but we believe a safe space for exploration goes beyond spoken words. While the teacher is not a therapist, it is the discipline in itself, the core of our programs, which allows the body to send impulses and inform the brain that danger is no longer a constant data.
Recovery takes time, patience and dedication. Refugees and asylum seekers often suffer from severe trauma, everlasting scars, both physical and psychological, and massive uncertainty about the future. Restoring the sense of self, rebuilding self-esteem and emotional resilience, taking the time to rediscover the bodies and quiet the breath and the mind in a safe, supportive and social environment is setting up the first stepping stones towards rebuilding a new life.
Let's find freedom in our movements, reclaim power on our bodies and minds, and recreate a sense of community.
Together, let's commit to focus on joy, especially when joy has been locked out for some time.
